CAIRO – 6 November 2022: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said Sunday that the Green Zone at COP27 was designed in line with the highest possible standards.
Opening the exhibitions and pavilions area, Madbouli added that Egypt was keen to establish the largest Green Zone in COP's history to meet demand from all local and regional institutions.
The Africa Day at COP27 is concerned with ideas from African youth and entities that represent the continent to be an opportunity to hear their voice, the premier said.
Hosting COP27 in Africa offers an opportunity for the continent to send clear messages to the whole world that Africa needs very great support during the next stage to deal with climate change, he added.
Madbouli stated that the Green Zone at the summit Egypt is hosting has been extended to 12,000 square meters to accommodate civil society.
Madbouli said that Egypt is keen on making room for everybody, and listening to all views and visions put forward by organizations, individuals, and civil society. He added that also the contribution of women and youth is highly prioritized.
Madbouli described the Green Zone in COP27 as the largest at COP summits.Africa needs very large support during the next stage to cope with climate change, the premier said.
Egypt has expanded the Green Zone to send an important message, as it is considered an unofficial area, where representatives of civil society, including international, regional, and local associations, as well as experts, academics, youth, and private sector companies come together to offer innovative solutions for climate challenges, he added in a statement.
The Green Zone's design as a lotus flower reflects the ancient Egyptian civilisation, he added.
In turn, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said the Green Zone's buildings are made of sustainable reused fabrics, wood and cork, while its artistic interiors showcase recycled materials.
Thematic days of COP27 cover: promoting finance, science, promoting youth and future generation participation, promoting mitigation and decarbonization, adaptation, agriculture and water, women, promoting energy, civil society and action for climate empowerment, biodiversity, and solutions, she added.
COP 27 kicked off on Sunday starting with the procedural session where Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry was handed over the presidency of the summit by COP 26 President Alok Sharma.
