CAIRO – 3 November 2022: More than 100 heads of state and governments will attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) set to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The heads of state and government will deliver their national statements on November 7 and 8 at the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit, one day after the kick-off of the two-week conference. On the opening day, Egyptian Foreign Minister and COP27 President-Designate Sameh Shoukry will be officially elected as the President of the Conference of the Parities' 27th session.
A total of 40,000 participants are expected to attend Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit, thematic days, flagship initiatives, and Green Zone activities, and are set to engage with climate and other overlapping global challenges.
Shoukry stated that Egypt is ready to host the world leaders, delegates and climate stakeholders under the slogan "Together for Implementation".
US President Joe Biden will not attend the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit but he will participate in the conference on November 11 “to advance the global climate fight and help the most vulnerable build resilience to climate impacts, and he will highlight the need for the world to act in this decisive decade,” according to a statement from the White House.
Meanwhile, New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday that he will attend the conference after having been slammed for not attending. “There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That is why I will attend COP27 next week to deliver on Glasgow's legacy of building a secure and sustainable future,” Sunak said on Twitter.
Also, Israel's caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid cancelled plans to attend the Cop27 amid the Israeli legislative elections as the initial results show the wining of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, AFP reported on Wednesday.
