CAIRO – 28 October 2022: Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will attend the UN Climate Change Conference of 2022 (COP27) in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh, Italy’s news agency ANSA reported, quoting her office as saying.
The new premier will attend the World Leaders’ Summit at COP27 taking place on 7-8 November.
This will follow Meloni’s first foreign trip to Brussels, which will take place on 3 November, her office noted.
Meloni has reiterated Italy’s keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation with Egypt in various fields, including energy security, Mediterranean and Middle East stability, human rights, and religious freedom.
Egypt will host COP27 from 6 to 18 November with promises to work on turning climate pledges into action as per the Paris Agreement.
Earlier this month, Egypt’s top climate negotiator Mohamed Nasr said more than 90 heads of states and leaders are expected to attend the leaders’ summit at COP27, which is dubbed Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit.
Last month, The Egyptian COP27 Presidency called upon the heads of the state to come and “put their political differences aside to mainly face the “real existential threat of climate change.”
Ambassador Wael Aboulmagd, Special Representative of the COP27 President said the war of Ukraine has impacted global efforts regarding climate action and also had an indirect impact on food and energy.
He called for taking speed action to address the climate-related issues as delaying would make the matter much harder.
He expressed his aspiration that the conference would result in progress on mitigation and adaptation programs and a satisfactory program on the loss and damage of climate change.
