CAIRO – 27 October 2022: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not attend the COP27 climate summit that begins in Egypt next month, due to “other pressing commitments,” according to Downing Street statement on Thursday.

As for the participation of UK King Charles III, Ambassador Mohamed Nasr, Lead Negotiator and Director General Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Egypt is still inviting him to attend the conference as the king is known with his advocacy for climate change.

The ambassador invited new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to the conference, hoping that the UK doesn’t make “backsliding” on its financial pledges despite its economic crisis.

During an annual ceremony to celebrate the UN Day held by the Foreign Ministry and the UN Resident Office in Cairo at Orman Garden, Thursday, Shoukry urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities regarding the world food and climate crises which have become closely relevant to maintaining international peace and security.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry reaffirmed that the success of COP27 requires a consolidation of efforts from all parties with the aim of achieving the objectives of the climate action and realizing funding sustainability.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi congratulated on Tuesday British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on assuming his new post.

Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said the president wished Rishi a success in his new job, pointing out that he looks forward to joint cooperation with the newly-picked prime minister to strengthen bilateral relations, achieve security and stability and spread peace worldwide.
