CAIRO – 19 September 2022: The Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) stripped on Sunday renowned global Muslim Brotherhood figure Ibrahim El-Zayat, brother-in-law of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood group in Turkey, of his posts in the center, according to media reports.
This comes as the council, a renowned Islamic organization with tens of thousands of Muslim members of different nationalities, held its elections yesterday amid major challenges facing Muslims in Germany, according to the reports.
Zayat is one of the prominent global European figures in the International Organization of the Muslim. Zayat is wanted by the Egyptian government to serve a 10-year-prison sentence, according to the reports.
Commenting on the news, Eslam El-Katatny, a researcher in political Islamist movements and a Muslim Brotherhood dissident, said the council’s movement to expel Zayat is “very important” as he is an “influential figure” of the global Muslim Brotherhood global group.
Zayat was one of the ZMD founders and served as the council’s secretary-general, Katatny said in remarks to Extra News on Monday.
“Taking a decision to strip Zayat of all posts he served in [in the council] is an important step by the German government and a turning point for European companies with regards to dealing with the Brotherhood group file,” he added.
The Muslim Brotherhood group has been keen to falsely introduce itself as a moderate group that is away from violence unlike Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), the researcher said.
He added that the Muslim Brotherhood had dominated the ZMD with former Supreme Guide of MB Mahdi Akef being one of its leaders in the past.
Zayat is a European Muslim Brotherhood figure, who served in many important Islamic organizations in Europe and Saudi Arabia. In 2002, Zayat became head of the Islamic Community of Germany, succeeding Ali Ghaleb Himmat, a renowned figure of the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe.
