CAIRO – 6 September 2022: Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit affirmed on Monday the need to find a fair and permanent solution to the Palestinian cause, the league said in a statement.
Receiving Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Egypt, Aboul Gheit stressed the need for ending occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, adding that this is considered a key to stability in the Middle East.
Aboul Gheit affirmed that the stalemate in the political track portends the worst consequences.
President Abbas briefed the Arab League chief on the Palestinian situation currently in light of the stalemate in the political track and continuation of Israeli occupation’s repressive measures and settlement expansion, the league added.
The meeting came ahead of the 158th regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level scheduled to be held in the league’s headquarters today with the Palestinian cause likely to be on top of the meeting agenda.
In November, the Arab League will be holding its first annual summit in Algeria in three years after being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Arab League held its last summit in Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, in March 2019.
Aboul Gheit’s remarks also come a month after Egypt contributed to brokering a ceasefire in Gaza after few days of Israeli assault killed more than 40 Palestinians, including children.
