CAIRO – 31 August 2022: The Egyptian Armed Forces issued a press statement Wednesday showcasing it had removed – in the recent years - over 25 million mines, explosives, and ammunition that had been in the Western Desert, composing 22 percent of the country's territories, since World War II.

The military spokesperson noted that the mines removal made room for building houses, digging Al Hammam Canal, reclaiming lands, exploring and extracting oil, introducing industrial complexes, and allocating lands to the establishment of Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant among others.

The statement added that the initiative was implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in the areas of Alamain, Hammam, Dabaa, Matrouh, Negila, Barani, Saloum, and Siwa.

The Egyptian government and Al Orman Charity Association distributed in 2017, 74 prostheses on mines victims, including 33 artificial limbs at a cost of LE 396,000.
