CAIRO – 30 August 2022: Chief of International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Saad Moussa stated in a phone-in Tuesday that Egypt targets to reclaim 3.5-4 million feddans (one feddan equals 4,500 square meters) in the coming three years.
Moussa noted that the water to be used in such reclamation endeavors is the outcome of projects implemented to achieve efficiency, such as the canals lining project worth LE 120 billion.
Former Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdel Aty declared earlier in August that 2,803 kilometers of canals in Upper Egypt had been lined at a budget of LE 10.1 billion.
The former minister added that the lining of 1,776 kilometers of canals in Delta was underway, and that work is carried out at LE 6.4 billion in Giza, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Menya, Asyut, Sohag, Qena, and Aswan.
Abdel Aty also announced that tenders would be invited soon for private firms to implement the lining of 1,216 kilometers of canals at a cost of LE 4 billion.
The ministry announced in June that it had rehabilitated canals stretching on a total of 5,242 kilometers in different governorates. The project, launched by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, aims to rehabilitate canals with a total length of 20,000 kilometers by mid-2024.
