CAIRO - 29 Augut 2022: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is following with deep concern reports of violent clashes in Tripoli causing civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure, a statement by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.

Guterres, in a Sunday statement carried by Libya Al Ahrar, called for an immediate cessation of violence in Tripoli and urged the Libyan parties to engage in a genuine dialogue to address the ongoing political impasse and not to use force to resolve their differences.

Guterres further called on the Libyan parties to protect civilians and refrain from taking any actions that could escalate tensions and deepen divisions.

The statement said that the UN remains ready to provide good offices and mediation to help Libyan actors chart a way out of the political deadlock, which is increasingly threatening Libya’s hard-won stability.

At least 32 people were killed and dozens more wounded during the fighting, the health ministry said.

Egypt is conducting contacts to reach an urgent truce in Libya after breaking out clashes among armed militias amid a conflict between the interim Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, and the Prime Minister-designate, Fathi Bashagha: Sources told Al Arabiya.

Libya has been in chaos since the Nato-backed uprising in 2011 that ousted long-serving ruler Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

Despite this, the country had enjoyed a relatively calm period over the past two years.

On Saturday, armed forces of the internationally recognised government tried to push back a convoy of militia loyal to Fathi Bashagha - the man who is recognised as prime minister by a rival, eastern parliament and is vying for control of the country.
