CAIRO – 7 August 2022: In a meeting with the government, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was briefed on the developments of electrical interconnection projects with neighboring countries, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Greece and Cyprus, said Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady in a statement on Sunday.

In a meeting during which he followed up on the state’s strategy for new and sustainable energy, as well as generating power for national development projects.

The meeting reviewed developments in electricity generation from new and renewable energy, which is produced by wind and solar energy, in collaboration with private sector companies and partnerships with foreign expertise. This comes within the framework of Egypt’s strategy for integrated and sustainable energy, which aims to reach 42% of renewable energy in the electrical energy mix in Egypt by 2035. This strategy seeks to leverage Egypt's renewable energy resources and potential, Rady said.

As to the use of wind energy, the meeting reviewed efforts to increase capabilities generated by wind turbines by relying on urtla-high turbines with high production capacities so as to leverage wind energy in regions characterized by high wind speed nationwide, Rady added.

The meeting also discussed developments in cooperation with international expertise in implementing the national strategy for generating green hydrogen using renewable energy, in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Ministries of Electricity and Petroleum.

President El-Sisi gave directives to enhance national plans related to increasing renewable energy and optimizing its value, aiming to diversify the sources of energy supply for the development process. This includes adding the green hydrogen component to the integrated energy system, to keep pace with the global development on climate change and the orientation towards a green economy in partnership with the private sector and long-standing international expertise in this field. This comes in light of the growing global interest in green hydrogen projects as it represents a promising source of energy, while working to localize the electrolysis device industry, which is the cornerstone of this industry.

The discussions also tackled work progress in securing electrical power for national development projects, particularly in land reclamation projects, notably in Sinai, the southern valley and the new delta. They focused on the electrical work at water-lifting stations used in agriculture and land reclamation. President El-Sisi gave directives to complete the projects of supplying electric power lines for national agricultural projects, as energy supply is an essential component of development needs across the republic.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly; Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mohamed Shaker; Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Tarek El Molla; Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Hala El-Said; and Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohamed Maait.
