CAIRO – 13 July 2022: UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt Mahmoud Mohieldin said success in the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt next November requires the world to abandon a “siloed approach to climate action”.
In a speech at Sydney Energy Forum on Wednesday, Mohieldin affirmed that COP27 must focus on climate adaptation, saying adaptation has been “forgotten for many years” at UN climate change conference, The Guardian reported.
This is “because of a generous assumption that we are going to be doing fantastically well on mitigation, so nobody should worry about adaptation,” he added.
He said COP27 needs to get from “summits to solutions,” saying small and developing countries need to finance climate transition amid the expensive global adaptation task.
Egypt is scheduled to host the climate conference on 6-18 November in Sharm El-Sheikh city with ambitions to turn climate pledges into action.
Egypt has affirmed the importance it attaches to addressing losses and damages caused by climate change as well as to the issue of providing climate finance, especially for developing countries.
Egypt in many occasions has affirmed keenness to speak for African aspirations during COP27 and the funding that the African countries require to face climate change.
This comes especially as Africa accounts for only 3.8 percent of global greenhouse emissions, according to CDP Africa, which is the smallest share of emissions around the globe.
