CAIRO – 9 July 2022: In line with the global trend of green transition that is applied to airports, shifting to rely on new and renewable energies, Egypt has begun procedures for converting Sharm el-Sheikh Airport into a green airport, powered by solar energy units.
This move comes in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable development, and ahead of the South Sinai resort’s hosting of the COP27 conference in November.
In this report, et highlights the importance and details of the transition project in relation to the upcoming climate conference:
1- The project of transforming Sharm El-Sheikh Airport into an environmentally-friendly airport is one of the projects that are being carried out in preparation for declaring Sharm el-Sheikh a green city.
2- The Sharm El-Sheikh Green Airport project comes as a continuation of the successful experience, which was implemented through the Industrial Modernization Center, in the implementation of the Egypt-PV small solar cell systems project.
3- The small solar cell project is a national project implemented by the Industry Modernization Center of the Ministry of Industry, where it provided technical and financial support for the supply, implementation and operation of small solar cells at Cairo Airport, during August 2021.
4- Two studies have been completed to install solar energy plants at Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, one of which is in the arrival hall with a capacity of 300 kilowatts, which is ready for tender, and the other is for the installation of a unit with a capacity of 5 megabytes, in order to cover the airport consumption throughout the year, and it will be offered to the investing companies under 10-year purchase contract.
5- Sharm El-Sheikh Airport project, implemented by the Industrial Modernization Center in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, in developing and supporting the spread of the installation of solar cell systems, in many different sectors, including the industrial, commercial, tourism, educational and public buildings sectors.
6- The national project for small solar energy units won the British Institute award for the year 2020 as the best projects submitted globally to reduce greenhouse gases.
7- The deployment of small solar power stations in Sharm El-Sheikh, reflects the directives of the Prime Minister and the concerted efforts between the ministries of aviation, environment, trade, industry, tourism and electricity, in cooperation with the Governorate of South Sinai and the United Nations Development Program.
8- The project of small solar energy units seeks to stimulate the use of environmentally friendly energy, and spread awareness towards the optimal use of natural resources, which characterizes the city of Sharm El Sheikh.
9- The Sharm El-Sheikh Airport project, which operates on solar energy, is one of the many steps that will be taken, in the use of clean energy at Sharm El-Sheikh Airport, in order to transform it into an environmentally friendly airport.
