Sisi sends invitation letter to S. Sudan’s Kiir to participate in COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh

CAIRO – 2 July 2022: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has sent an invitation letter to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference that Egypt will host in November in Sharm El-Sheikh city.

Egyptian Ambassador to Juba Moataz Mostafa handed the letter to Kiir, expressing aspiration for the South Sudanese president’s participation in this important international event, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.

Mostafa affirmed the importance of South Sudan’s participation in COP27 as Egypt is keen to highlight the issues and challenges that the African countries are facing regarding climate during the conference.

For his part, Kiir expressed appreciation of Sisi’s invitation for him to participate in this prominent event, asking that his greetings be conveyed to his Egyptian counterpart.

Kiir also expressed appreciation of Sisi’s efforts to support the relations between Egypt and South Sudan.

Egypt in many occasions has affirmed keenness to speak for African aspirations during COP27 and the funding that the African countries require to face climate change.

This comes especially as Africa accounts for only 3.8 percent of global greenhouse emissions, according to CDP Africa, which is the smallest share of emissions around the globe.

On Thursday, a delegation from the Egyptian presidency for the COP27 held a meeting with Deputy Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Monique Nsanzabaganwa to brief her on the latest preparations for COP27.

This came during the visit paid by the presidential delegation to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.

During the meeting at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Egyptian delegation reiterated the keenness of the Egyptian presidency on contacting the AU on COP27, as the climate file is a top priority to the AU and the African continent in general.

Nsanzabaganwa welcomed the Egyptian delegation and also Egypt's eagerness to keep in touch with the AU on preparations for COP27.

She called for boosting coordination between Egypt and the AU concerning COP27, which is seen as a unique opportunity allowing Africa to express its concerns and priorities regarding the climate issue.
