CAIRO - 26 June 2022: The health ministry has created a Point Prevalence Survey "PPS" model as an electronic tool for monitoring antimicrobial consumption at state hospitals, Spokesman for the Health and Population Ministry Hossam Abdel Ghaffar revealed Saturday.

In a statement, Abdel Ghaffar said that the ministry had organized field visits to 1st phase hospitals as part of a national plan for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, while promoting awareness of antimicrobial resistance, which would serve Egypt's Vision 2030 for sustainable development.

The visits covered some ministry-affiliated and university hospitals, including Fayyoum General Hospital, Mounira General Hospital, Nasr City Hospital for Health Insurance, Sahel Teaching Hospital, and Dar Al Shifa Hospital, the spokesman noted.

The Point Prevalence Surveys (PPS) is a WHO methodology for collecting information on prescribing practices of antibiotics and other information relevant to treatment and management of infectious diseases in hospitalized patients, and complements surveillance of antimicrobial consumption.

The web-based tool was originally developed in the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC) project with funding provided by the European Commission.

The tool was successfully used in hundreds of European hospitals, and was adapted to a global tool (GlobalPPS) in response to the 4th World Forum on Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance “Control of Antimicrobial Resistance without borders” which took place in Annecy, France, in June 2013.
