CAIRO – 23 June 2022: Egypt’s President of the National Council for Women [NCW] Maya Morsy was elected to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for 2023-2026.
The Egyptian candidate obtained 126 votes in the elections that took place Tuesday, June 23, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women comprises 23 prominent independent experts with extensive academic and practical experience and qualifications on women's issues.
Egypt was keen to present a distinguished candidate to this election to continue its contribution to the advancement of the status of women at the international level by eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls.
Ambassador Osama AbdelKhalek, Egypt's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, declared the victory of the Egyptian candidate during this highly competitive election, following obtaining the fourth-highest number of votes among 23 candidates running for only 12 seats during the mid-term elections of the Committee. Moreover, The Permanent Representative of Egypt expressed his deep appreciation to all states that Supported Egypt's candidate during this election.
The Permanent Representative of Egypt expresses his profound thanks to all the delegations that supported the Egyptian candidate during those elections, which confirms the position that Egypt enjoys in the international community, in addition to the professional competence and experience enjoyed by Maya Morsy.
