CAIRO – 18 June 2022: Egypt is to test its first electric LRT train in a few days for the first time without passengers before the actual operation.
Designed at a speed of 120 km/h, the train links a number of cities in Egypt, along with the new Administrative capital, and has 12 stations.
It includes ladies carts, with each train having six vehicles.
The total number of trains in the first and second stages is 22, with a cost of $227 million.
Over the past months, Egypt received batches of the LRT train vehicles, which were installed ahead of pilot operation.
Egypt has signed a contract – worth $227 million - with a Chinese company to supply 22 trains for the LRT, planned to transport 500,000 passengers per day as it connects Salam City with 10th of Ramadan City through the New Administrative Capital (NAC).
The LRT will be operated by a French company for 15 years. Yet, it would not have the right to do ticket pricing. He elaborated that the project will serve various social segments, and that it will begin operation over phases.
The electric light rail transit or (LRT) is considered one of the latest major means of transportation in Egypt. The other under-progress projects carried out by Egypt are the high-speed electric train, the monorail, and the fourth metro line located in Al Haram Street.
