CAIRO – 15 June 2022: The eighth version of the annual Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians kicked off on Wednesday in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh city to coordinate parliamentary action to mitigate the climate change impact.

Bringing together young parliamentarians from dozens of countries, the Eighth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians (15-16 June) will also coordinate action on ensuring that global warming does not exceed 1.5 degree Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement.

Speaker of Egyptian Parliament Hanafi El-Gebali is scheduled to give the opening remarks of the conference today.

The Conference is open to young parliamentarians under 45 years of age.

The seventh edition took place virtually in 2021 as the last edition that was held physically convened in Paraguay in 2019.

The conference, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is a platform for young Parliament members that aims at advancing youth empowerment by meeting and exchanging opinions in this regard.

As climate change and global warming represent the most urgent and vital issue in 2022, the eighth IPU conference will address efforts to mitigate climate change impacts.

Egypt is scheduled to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November this year in Sharm El-Sheikh city with plans to achieve consensus among the various international climate action stakeholders, especially with regard to the issues of adapting to climate change, mitigating its negative repercussions, addressing losses and damages, and providing climate finance.

Egypt is also keen on implementing climate pledges and transforming them into a concrete reality, whether in terms of meeting the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) or implementing the commitments and pledges made by the various parties involved in climate action.

Egypt has expressed keenness to put the African climate change concerns at the forefront of the topics the session will address.
