Egypt’s PM Madbouli follows up with ‘Haya Karima’ updates

CAIRO – 1 June 2022: Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli followed up, Wednesday with the recent updates of the presidential initiative ‘Haya Karima’ [Decent Life] for rural development.

During a ministerial meeting that included ministers of education and local development along with number of senior officials, Madbouli was briefed on the executive summary on the completion of sanitation and drinking water networks, electricity and gas grids, telecommunications and road networks, as well as government complexes, according to a statement by Cabinet Spokesman Nader Saad.

The first phase, which covers 1,477 villages nationwide, includes about 30,000 projects, over 90 per cent of which have already been completed in eight governorates, the spokesman said.

In addition, over 70 per cent of targeted projects have also been accomplished in seven governorates; while less than 70 per cent of these projects have been completed in five governorates, Saad noted.

The meeting also tackled the progress made in establishing wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, agro-parks, hospitals, ambulance units, and youth centers.

The premier also discussed the challenges facing building and construction projects, especially in light of the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic on the building sector, such supply chain issues, and soaring costs of shipping, logistics, and raw material.

Representatives from the Central Agency for Reconstruction, the General Authority for Educational Buildings (GAEB), the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, the General Authority of Healthcare, and the National Organization for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage "NOPWASD", were attending the meeting.

In May 16, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said that Haya Karema [Decent Life] presidential initiative is one of Egypt’s top priorities national projects.

During a press conference, to announce the government’s plan to deal with the global economic crisis, Madbouly affirmed that the State gives top priority to the Decent Life imitative, pointing out the country faces the obstacle of providing production supplies and raw materials to the initiative's projects.

The conference was attended by 40 journalists and 55 correspondents of about 30 foreign media outlets and ministers, where Madbouly answered nearly 100 questions about Egypt's economy and administration.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly added that Egypt was able to cope with all the unprecedented global crises over the past three years.

“Egypt is not isolated from the world. But, we will also overcome the current crisis, and continue to achieve positive growth rates for the benefit of all the Egyptians during the next stage,” he told a press conference.

“We have developed a plan to enhance the private sector's role, accelerate the localization of industries, reduce public debt and the budget deficit, revitalize the Egyptian Stock Exchange, move forward with social protection measures, and provide basic commodities to citizens,” the premier said.

“As part of the whole world, we are facing the worst global crisis since the 1920s that has left losses of nearly $12 trillion in global GDP so far,” he added.
