Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali Moselhi said that the country’s strategic stock of wheat is sufficient for nearly four months.
In TV statements on Monday evening, Moselhi added that about 2.7 million tons of wheat has so far been received from local farmers during April harvest season, and the government plans to buy over five million tons of wheat from local farmers by the end of the season.
This will make the country's strategic wheat stock sufficient till January, the minister noted, highlighting a ministerial strategy to diversify its wheat suppliers by opening communication channels with Russia, Ukraine, France, and Australia.
He went on to say that Egypt has already received all its wheat shipments exported from Russia, Ukraine, and Romania, except for one shipment from Ukraine loaded on two vessels, the first vessel, carrying 57,000 tons, received order to sail to Egypt after the loading was disrupted by the Russian-Ukrainian war. The vessel was supposed to carry 60,000 tons.
Meanwhile the other vessel, loaded with 37,000 tons, left the port three days after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, but it is still docked at a Romanian port due to the closure of the Dead Sea passage.
