Egypt’s FM heads to Copenhagen to partake in ministerial meeting on climate commitments

CAIRO – 11 May 2022: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, also president designate of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), has headed to the Danish capital of Copenhagen to participate in the ministerial meeting on climate commitments on 12-13 May.

In a statement on Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said the meeting is hosted by Denmark and co-chaired by Egypt, the president of COP27, and the UK as the president of COP26.

Many ministers and officials of member states of the United Nations Framework Convention for Change Climate (UNFCCC) will attend the meeting, said the statement.

The meeting coincides with the 30th anniversary of the convention and represents an opportunity for discussing the executive steps required to push forward the path of climate commitments in light of the points agreed upon during the past conferences, Paris Agreement, and the Glasgow charter.

This comes through focusing on issues of reducing emissions, security climate funds, as well as related harms resulting from climate change, and adaptation to climate change implications.

The visit comes within the framework of enhancing cooperation between the two countries, Hafez said.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will receive Shoukry to discuss boosting bilateral relations between the two countries, Hafez said.

The Egyptian foreign minister will also meet with his Danish counterpart, Jeppe Kofod, to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation between the two countries and means of boosting these relations, the spokesman added.

Egypt will host COP27 in November this year in South Sinai’s Sharm El-Sheikh city. During the stage of preparations for the conference, Egypt has vowed to speak for Africa’s aspirations to face climate change, build on the successful outcomes of COP26 in Glasgow, turn climate pledges into actions, and support Paris Agreement.
