CAIRO – 8 May 2022: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli received on Sunday two telephone calls from the Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Jordanian Prime Minister Beshr Al Khaswaneh.

During the phone calls, both Mikati and Khasawneh condoled with the prime minister over the death of a number of army personnel in a terrorist attack on a water lifting station west of Sinai.

The two prime ministers condemned the terrorist attack and expressed support for Egypt in its fight against terrorism.

A military officer and 10 soldiers were killed as the Egyptian army managed to foil a terrorist attack against a water lift station east of the Suez Canal, Egyptian Military Spokesman Gharib Abdel Hafez said in a statement.

Five military personnel were also injured as the Egyptian army confronted the attack carried out by a group of takfiri elements, the spokesman said on Saturday.

The terrorist elements are being pursued and besieged in one of the isolated areas in Sinai, the spokesman added.

“The armed forces affirm their continued efforts to eradicate terrorism and uproot its roots,” the spokesman stressed.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed later on Saturday that treacherous terrorist attacks will not undermine the determination of people and the army to uproot terrorism.

“The loyal sons of the homeland are still responding to the call of the nation with full courage and sacrifice, continuing unique self-denial and a belief in the doctrine of safeguarding the homeland, which would not be shaken,” Sisi wrote in a Facebook post.

The president extended sincere condolences to the great Egyptian people, armed forces and the families of the martyrs, wishing the injured people a speedy recovery.

Many Arab countries, European Union, United States, United Nations, African Union, and the Arab League among others also condemned the attack on May 7-8.
