CAIRO – 13 July 2017: Egypt has 45 slum areas located underneath high-voltage transmission lines exposing their inhabitants to danger. Eleven of these are in Qalyubia Governorate, which is part of Greater Cairo, stretching on an area of 40 feddans (1 feddan equals 1025 acres) and comprising 4,000 residential units.
Minister of Housing, Utility, and Urban Development Mostafa Madbouly said that displacing the lines away from these slums in Qalyubia Governorate only costs up to LE 2.2 billion ($122 million).
That is why there has been coordination with Governor Mohamed Ashmawy and the officials of Slums Development Fund to convince dwellers of moving to new residential units in safe planned areas having all facilities in the social housing project in the same governorate.
That proposal would be implemented on other slum areas of this kind around the country.
On the other hand, Qalyubia governor requested residential units for rent for disabled citizens in the governorate in the social housing project in El Khusus town. The minister approved the request for the two-bedroom apartments whose rent would be collected by the governorate’s authorities.
