Egypt’s community in Ukraine secure safe exit to stranded Egyptian and his family in Donbas

CAIRO – 15 April 2022:  The Egyptian community in Ukraine, in coordination with the Egyptian Embassy succeeded in evacuating and securing safe exit for an Egyptian citizen called Sherif Abdel Mohsen Ahmed and his Ukrainian wife Irina from Donbas to Dnipro city.

According to sources from the Egyptian community in Ukraine, Abdel Mohsen was stuck in Donbas with his wife and mother-in-law since the war started last February, as he was located at the city of Liman, which was witnessing huge clashes and violent bombing between the Ukrainian and the Russian forces.

The family has spent most of its time since the beginning of the war in one of the underground bunkers to escape the inferno of war. The family has suffered all the time from severe food shortages, in addition to the feeling of danger that haunted the family at all times.

After weeks of bombing, Sharif was able to communicate with the Vice President of the Egyptian community in Ukraine, Ahmed Mohamed Al-Saeed, and with the Egyptian embassy in Ukraine to secure a safe exit for him and his family to a safer city inside Ukraine.

Last February, Russia started a military operation in Ukraine. As a result of the operation number of sanctions was imposed on the Russian economy. International flights were also halted due to the operation temporarily.

In April, Russia was suspended from the United Nations’ leading human rights body as its invasion of Ukraine continues to provoke revulsion and outrage around the world.

At a meeting of the UN general assembly on Thursday, 93 members voted in favor of the diplomatic rebuke while 24 were against and 58 abstained.

This met the required threshold of a two-thirds majority of the assembly members that vote yes or no, with abstentions not counting in the calculation.

Russia is the first permanent member of the UN security council to have its membership revoked from any UN body.

It is also only the second country to have its membership rights stripped at the human rights council, which was established in 2006. The assembly suspended Libya in 2011 when upheaval in the north African country toppled its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.
