Egypt’s president urges continuing measures to support tourism amidst ongoing global developments

CAIRO – 2 April 2022: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for continuing measures that aim at supporting the tourism sector in the face of the repercussions of the ongoing global incidents, including coronavirus and the Ukraine crisis.

In a meeting with Prime Minster Mostafa Madbouli and Tourism Minister Khaled El-Anani on Saturday, Sisi affirmed the need to guarantee all forms of care and good stay to tourists of all nationalities who are present in Egypt.

With the occurrence of the Russia-Ukraine crisis late in February, Egypt extended the stay of the Ukrainian tourists in the Egyptian resorts free of charge.

Flag carrier EgyptAir and Air Cairo also operated flights to move Ukrainian tourists to Ukraine’s European neighboring countries free of charge. Thousands of Ukrainian tourists have been moved from Egypt to the European countries since then.

Russian and Ukrainian tourists have made up a majority of foreign visitors to Egypt over the past years. Amid the crisis, Egypt has expressed concerns over the crisis’s impact on tourism flow to the country.

According to estimates, about 1.5 million Ukrainian tourists visited Egypt in 2019.

The crisis also comes while Egypt has been struggling to achieve tourism recovery after it was badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
