CAIRO – 11 March 2022: Sameh Shoukry, Egypt’s foreign minister and president-designate of the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP27), discussed preparations for holding the conference in Egypt next November in a virtual meeting on Thursday with COP26 President and UK Minister of State Alok Sharma.
“The meeting comes as Egypt is keen to coordinate and consult with all the parties to build on outcomes of COP26 held in Glasgow,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, hailing the COP26’s outcome that enhances international efforts in the face of climate change.
The meeting also affirmed the special importance Egypt attaches to moving from the phase of climate pledges to the phase of actual implementation of such pledges on the ground in light of the agenda proposed by Egypt during its presidency of COP27.
Earlier this month, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi followed up on preparations for COP27 set to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh city this year.
During a meeting with the ministerial group in charge of preparing for the conference and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Sisi ordered providing all financial resources to gear up for the summit in November.
Sisi urged all relevant bodies to step up for organizing the event in a way that reflects Egypt's regional and international significance and the country’s efforts to achieve green transition, protect environment and increase the use of clean energy.
The ministerial committee reviewed the most important axes of the upcoming climate summit and the desired results, as well as the ongoing coordination in this context with the British presidency of COP26.
The committee also reviewed the Egyptian vision related to the substantive aspects of the summit, represented in moving the summit’s work from commitments to the implementation stage and advancing national and African concerns on climate change issues.
Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Khaled El-Anani, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities; and Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Planning attended the meeting.
Attendees also included Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation; Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance; Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment; Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Assem El-Gazzar, Minister of Housing; Mohamed Manar, Minister of Civil Aviation, and Major General Khaled Fouda, Governor of South Sinai.
