CAIRO – 1 March 2022: Egyptian Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology Amr Talaat said that the ministry is working to connect 3.5 million homes in villages to the internet within the coming three years.
The project is part of the infrastructure development of Haya Karima initiative, which aims to upgrade the living standards of the countryside in Egypt.
The investments to provide internet services to 3.5 million homes in villages are estimated at L.E. 20 billion. The project also targets to connect another one million homes to the internet at a value of L.E. 5.8 billion.
Minister Amr Talaat’s remarks came during his participation in the MWC World Telecommunications Exhibition that is being held in Barcelona, Spain from February 28 to March 3.
He further revealed that the ministry has invested $2 billion in developing the internet infrastructure in urban areas as part of the internet development plan of the year 2019. He added that Egypt’s internet services improved after it ranked the 40th in Africa.
The minister referred to a plan to accelerate the construction of mobile towers to improve services provided to citizens, pointing to the construction of 700 new mobile towers in 2020, as well as 1,300 new towers in 2021, an increase of nearly 70 percent.
