Egypt's cybercrimes law: Imprisonment and fine up to 200K over attacking website, email of legal person

CAIRO – 26 February 2022: The Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes Law, known in the media as the law of “internet crimes”, confronted the crimes of hacking and attacking the Internet networks belonging to the state or public legal persons.  

 

Below, et highlights terms of the law that protect the infringement of any citizen or legal person:

 

The Law No. 157 of 2018 worked to achieve a balance between combating the illegal use of computers and information networks, data protection government information, systems and information networks of the state or a public legal person from intercepting, hacking, tampering with, damaging or disrupting them in any way, in addition to the criminal protection for the sanctity of private life guaranteed by the constitution for electronic correspondence, and not to disclose or eavesdrop on it except by a reasoned judicial order.

 

Article 18 of the law criminalizes the act of attacking e-mail, websites or private accounts, and stipulates that a penalty of imprisonment for a period of no less than one month, and a fine of no less than fifty thousand pounds and not more than one hundred thousand pounds, or one of the two penalties, shall be imposed on anyone who destroys, malfunctions, slows down or hacks someone's email, website, or account.

 

According to the article, if the crime occurred on an e-mail, website or account of a private legal person, the penalty shall be imprisonment for a period of no less than 6 months and a fine of no less than 100,000 pounds and not more than 200,000 pounds, or one of these two penalties.
