CAIRO – 26 February 2022: The law in Egypt has set a number of procedures and requirements that regulate the residence of foreigners in the country, to preserve the safety of the foreigners and that of the homeland as well.
The law No. 89 of 1960 classified residency on the land of Egypt into three categories, including foreigners with special residency, namely:
1. Foreigners who were born in Egypt before the year 1952 and their residence there has not been interrupted until the effective date of this law.
2. Foreigners who have resided in Egypt for 20 years, and their residency has not been interrupted until the effective date of this law, and they entered the country by legal means.
3. Foreigners who have resided in Egypt for more than five years and there residences were renewed regularly until the date of enforcement of this law.
4. Foreigners who have been residing in Egypt for more than five years under the same conditions, if they either benefit the national economy or perform scientific, cultural or technical services for the country.
5. Scholars, experts in literature, art, industry, economy, and others who perform great services for the country, where a decision is issued by the Minister of Interior regard them.
6. This category obtains a residence permit for ten years, renewable upon request.
