CAIRO – 20 February 2022: UNICEF and Japan signed Sunday memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to launch a project aimed at expanding access to anti-COVID-19 vaccine in Egypt.

Japan is providing Egypt with a grant worth $3.4 million to purchase 500 vaccine refrigerators, 250 vaccine freezers, and 1,000 cooler boxes. That is in addition to 15 Japan-made and world's first refrigerated vehicles for vaccine. It is noteworthy to mention that the vehicle had obtained the Performance, Quality and Safety (PQS) prequalification from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The project also consists of training medical staff on delivering vaccination safely, reinforcing vaccination, promoting preventive measures on social media, and strengthening the reporting and follow-up system.

Japan had supported Egypt through the pandemic earlier when it granted the country 700,260 doses of Japan-made AstraZeneca vaccine via Covax in December 2021.
