Egyptian Constitutional Court’s ex-chief passes away after long struggle with illness

CAIRO – 16 February 2022: Former President of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) Saeed Marie passed away on Wednesday aged 68 as his health condition deteriorated after a long struggle with illness.

Marie had health issues over the past three years as he underwent a kidney transplant surgery and was recently admitted to the hospital.

Last week, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree to refer Counselor Saeed Marei to retirement reportedly over health issues and appointing Judge Boulos Fahmy.

Fahmy took the constitutional oath before President Sisi on 9 February.

The decree, No. 50 of 2022, ordered adding the remaining period of time for him until the age of seventy as an exceptional period of service.

Marie was appointed by the president as the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court in mid-2019.

Marie was born in 1954 in Giza. He obtained his Bachelor of Law in 1976 from Cairo University and a postgraduate diploma in public law in 1978 as well as postgraduate diploma in administrative sciences.

Marie was appointed as an assistant delegate to the State Council after graduation and assumed many high-level posts. In 2002, he was appointed as vice-president of the Supreme Constitutional Court and was selected as the President of the Court in 2019.
