CAIRO – 7 February 2022: Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawy showcased in a meeting Monday that LE10 trillion ($62.5 billion) have been spent on the development of Upper Egypt since 2014.

 

Those were spent on introducing and upgrading infrastructure in the 10 governorates as well as modernizing the delivery of various services. The minister noted that such expenditure is not aimed at just the improvement of the living conditions of citizens but also at job creation through attracting investment.

 

Shaarawy highlighted that is the next phase different ministries are concerting their efforts to accomplish within the Upper Egypt revamping plan.

 

Development works at the majority of rural villages of Upper Egypt have been taking place under the umbrella of Decent Life initiative since its launching in early 2021. The nation's flagship project – worth LE700 billion ($43.75 billion) - is targeted at 4,500 low-income rural villages dwelled by 58 million citizens, and is planned to get completed in 2023.  

 

The Upper Egyptian governorates are Fayoum, Beni Suef, Menya, Asyut, Qena, Sohag, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea, and New Valley.
