CAIRO – 3 February 2022: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale hit western Cyprus on Wednesday and and was felt by some residents in the northern Egyptian governorate of Dameitta.
The quake was recorded around 400 km away from Damietta at 11:03 pm local time and it was felt by citizens but caused no damage, said Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) in a statement.
Although Egypt is typically an earthquake safe country, several earthquakes struck near the country in the past few months.
Earlier this month, the National Network for Earthquakes registered a 6.6 tremor in eastern Mediterranean that was felt in some Egyptian cities.
He added, in a statement, that the epicenter of the tremor was 415 km from Damietta. It took place at around 3:00 a.m. in the morning Cairo local time.
