CAIRO - 26 January 2022: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said on Tuesday that efforts are underway to transform Sharm El Sheikh into a “green city” upon directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

During a meeting with a host of ministers and South Sinai officials to check on Egypt's preparations for hosting COP27 in November, the premier issued directives to operate the stalled tourism projects as soon as possible and establish electric vehicle charging stations in the city to preserve the environment.

For his part, Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled el Anani said a ministerial decision was issued to obligate hotel and tourist establishments in Sharm El Sheikh to obtain the green certificate as proof of applying eco-friendly practices.

He stressed that coordination is underway with the tourist establishments to provide the COP27 participants with hotel rooms.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad reviewed the proposal to transform Sharm El Sheikh into a green city.

She pointed out that the concept of green cities is based on rationalizing the consumption of resources, reducing waste, increasing the frequency of recycling and converting waste into energy, reducing emissions, and relying on sustainable energy.
