16 people killed, 18 other injured road accident in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula due to tense fog

CAIRO - 8 January 2022: Sixteen people were killed and 18 others were injured in a road accident South Sinan Peninsula on Saturday morning, announced the Egyptian Ministry of Health in a statement. 

 

A bus collided into a microbus along Suez-Tor Sinai highway due to a tense fog. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) warned, on Friday, that a blanket of tense fog would cover large areas of Egypt.

 

Health Ministry dispatched 13 ambulances and transported all the injured passengers to Al-Zahra Medical Center in El Tor Sinai, Abu Rudis Central Hospital, and Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, while the bodies of the victims were transferred to Al-Tor General Hospital, said the ministry’s spokesperson Houssam Abdel-Ghaffar in the statement.

 

He added that the injured people suffer from fractures, abrasions, wounds, and suspected concussion, noting that all the injured receive the necessary treatment and medical care.

 

Acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed to raise the state of medical emergency in the hospitals in the Suez Governorate and South Sinai, the spokesperson said.

 

Three days ago, the Egyptian Public Prosecution launched investigations into a multi-vehicle crash on the Middle Ring highway near 15 May City, southern Cairo. The accident claimed the live of one person and injured eight others.

 

The accident took place when a large truck collided with 13 cars that were parked on the roadside, the Public Prosecution said in a statement, adding that eight cars caught fire.

 

On December 17, 2021, six people were killed and 44 others were injured in a collision of two buses on Abu Simbel Road, Aswan, on Friday, local media reported.

 

In October 2020, Egypt’s Cabinet Information Center published an infographic showing a decline in the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Egypt this year, compared to the past year.

 

The cabinet’s infographic explains that Egypt recorded 7,000 death cases in 2020, compared to 12,000 cases in 2019, meaning a 44 percent decrease in the rate.

 

It went on to say that this progress is powered by the state’s steps to develop road and bridge sectors, and adopt road safety measures to reduce the number of injuries and deaths.
