CAIRO – 31 December 2021: An elderly woman became a trend in Egypt after a video surfaced on social media on Wednesday showing her trying to rescue two girls she thought were being kidnapped by a motorcyclist.

A Young man on a motorbike, now identified as Ahmed Idris, 18, snatched a mobile phone from two sisters, 12 and 14, in Helwan, a district south Cairo, but they hanged on to Idris and his motorbike. However, he still rode his bike for a few meters, dragging them behind and injuring them.

As the two girls were screaming, a medical mask-clad woman, Bushra Sorour, 59, who had not seen the actual theft, thought he was kidnapping him and stood in front of his vehicle. He hit her and kept riding until the two little girls fell off.

Idris was arrested and Sorour is being treated for a broken vertebra. She is seen holding her back after Idris fled.

Egyptian on social media applauded Sorour and lamented that the few men who were present did not intervene. In the video, the voices of people watching the CCTV are heard criticizing the “passivity” of the people in the video.

One woman is heard saying “No one’s there, no one but by pathetic excuse of a nephew who’s standing by the warehouses.”

In October, a reporter was live streaming a video from above a bridge in Cairo after a minor earthquake, and a 20-year-old man on a motorbike snatched his phone, turning the camera to his face and accidentally broadcasting himself smoking a cigarette to thousands of followers. He was arrested on the same day, but was trending on social media for a few days.
