President Sisi, Norway’s Scatec discuss cooperation on localizing water desalination technology

CAIRO – 15 December 2021: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed on Wednesday with Raymond Carlsen, CEO of Norway’s Scatec company, chances of cooperation to localize water desalination technology.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker, Chief of Egypt’s Sovereign Fund Ayman Soliman, Norwegian Ambassador to Cairo Hilde Klemetsdal, as well as a number of executive officials from the company attended the meeting.

Sisi and the Norwegian company also discussed cooperation concerning renewable energy projects within the framework of the national strategy to generate clean energy, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said.

The strategy is implemented in cooperation with longstanding foreign experienced partners in the field to make use of the renewable energy resources in Egypt, especially solar energy and wind.

During the meeting, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s keenness to cooperation with the Norwegian side due to its broad experience in the field of renewable energy.

The president affirmed the need that future cooperation projects between the two sides include technical training centers for capacity building in the fields of operation and maintenance.

This is in addition to research and development centers in cooperation with the various research centers and institutions in Egypt, Sisi added.

Carlsen, for his part, affirmed the importance Scatec attaches to discussing the chances of cooperation with Egypt within the framework of the company’s field of work and international experience.

This comes especially in light of the reputation Egypt enjoys on the regional level concerning protecting environment and relying on renewable energy resources.

Egypt is scheduled to host the United Nations climate conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022.
