Azhar Univ. president: Egypt keen on spreading moderate teachings of Islam worldwide

CAIRO - 11 December 2021: President of Al Azhar University Mohamed el Mahrasawy said on Saturday that the Egyptian state exerts strenuous efforts to promote the values of co-existence between Muslims and Christians in Egypt and spread the moderate teachings of Islam worldwide.


During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, Mahrasawy said Egypt hosts imams from around the globe to study at an international academy affiliated to Al Azahr on how to combat extremist thought.

He referred to efforts exerted by Al Azhar to promote the values ​​of brotherhood and coexistence between Muslims and Christians in Egypt and consolidate the values ​​of full citizenship.

Mahrasawy congratulated Guterres on receiving the Zayed Award For Human Fraternity in 2020.

Guterres, for his part, praised the efforts exerted by Al Azhar to reinforce the values ​​of brotherhood and coexistence in Egypt, expressing the UN readiness to support Al Azhar’s efforts to combat extremism and promote the values ​​of dialogue and coexistence.

Pope Francis of the Vatican and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed el Tayyeb set an example for religious leaders to promote the values ​​of brotherhood by signing the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, Guterres said.
