CAIRO – 22 November 2021: Deputy Cairo Governor for Southern Zone Gihane Abdel Moneim stated Monday that 3,456 families that used dwell a slum area called Ezbet Abou Qarn in Old Cairo have been moved to fully furnished units in Maan alternative housing project located in Al Salam City eastern Cairo within Decent Life initiative.

 

The original residences of those families, which were 1,213 flat-buildings, have been demolished for being unsafe. The deputy governor noted that Ezbet Abou Qarn spans over 42 feddans (one feddan equals 4,500 square meters), and that it was dwelled by 4,758 families.

 

Speaking of the services Maan encompasses, there are medical center, clinics, and ambulances. That is in addition to an elementary school, high school, and nurseries as well as a cultural center, three cinemas, and a theater having 700 seats.

 

A mosque was built, while the construction of a church is underway. Also, youth center, restaurant complex, shopping mall, orphanage, medical unit, retirement house, playground, and swimming pool are under construction.

 

The housing project has been connected to main squares in Greater Cairo through several bus lines, and equipped with outlets selling subsidized staples, and grocery shops. Further, a complex consisting 60 workshops was established to create jobs for residents.
