CAIRO – 10 July 2017: In addition to it being an environment- friendly mean of transportation, as Daniel Pemberton puts it in his ‘The Book of Idle Pleasures,’ “Cycling is possibly the greatest and most pleasurable form of transport ever invented.”

To this, Egypt is currently seeking to implement a nationwide bicycle-sharing system envisioned by Cairo governor Atef Abdel Hamid’s recent move to sign a cooperation protocol with United Nations Human Settlements Program to lay out a comprehensive network of routes suited for cycling across Egypt.

“More and more people start to opt for bicycles as an alternative to driving, especially after President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi had already pushed for an a initiative in which he called on Egyptians to ride bicycles,” Abdel Hamid said.

Abdel Hamid also announced that six bicycle-docking stations will soon be established and will get linked to subways routes and popular gathering spots.

He further elucidated that he looks forward to adopt an ideal new fangled urban lifestyle, which is already popular in Europe.

Citizens will end up ditching their cars and start riding subway and getting on bikes, the governor added.

Streets of Alfi and Saraya al-Azbakya are already closed in combined locks forming a pedestrian- friendly area and proper bicycle paths, he confirmed.
