CAIRO – 14 October 2021: A security source confirmed that the criminal lab was assigned to determine the causes of a fire that broke out in the main hall that will host El Gouna Film Festival in the Red Sea governorate.

The fire was brought under control and no deaths were reported.

Festival officials earlier revealed that the cause of the accident was an electrical short circuit, which led to a fire in the hall floor, wooden stands and some decorations.

Health Ministry said in a statement that 14 people were injured due to suffocation, affirming hospitalizing many of them to El Gouna Hospital while treating others in the scene.

The ministry said it sent numerous ambulances and mobile clinics to the place of the fire.

The festival officials, however, affirmed that the festival will be held as scheduled. It is scheduled to extend until 22 October.

GFF opened its curtains in 2017 with Cinema for Humanity supporting, recognizing and celebrating the influence filmmaking has to positively impact not only the industry, but communities around the world.

The fifth edition of El Gouna Film Festival  is set to be the biggest and best edition to date as it will house a unique selection of some the best international and regional feature narratives, short films and feature documentaries of 2021, with two international premieres, eight world premieres, and over 80 screenings from 44 countries.
