CAIRO – 11 October 2021: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] Representative in Egypt Pablo Mateu lauded the Egyptian government's granting refugee children from Syria, Sudan, Yemen, and South Sudan the right to join the public schools similar with the Egyptian children.
“The school year in Egypt started today and thousands of refugee children joined other children in Egyptian public schools. We look forward to further collaboration between @MoeteEg and @UNHCREgypt to make sure all refugee children have access to education in line with SDG4” Mateu tweeted.
The UN official thanked the ministry's efforts in meeting the refugees' needs, including allowing the refugee children to join schools for the second consecutive year without the need for valid cards.
According to UNHCR monthly statical report issued in September 2021, there is a total of 266,726 refugees and asylum seekers registered in Egypt, most of them are Syrians with 51 per cent, while other different nationalities represent 49 per cent.
It is also explained that Egypt has 184,771 asylum seekers and 81,955 refugees.
In June 2020, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the occasion of the world’s Refugee Day, saying that Egypt reaffirms its commitment to support the five-million refugees and migrants it hosts amid the current crisis of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
“Egypt is also making unremitting efforts to enhance cooperation at the international, Arab and African levels to find sustainable solutions to the conditions of refugees in the world,” the statement read.
The celebration of the day affirms the solidarity with more than 70 million refugees and asylum seekers who have been forced to flee wars and violence in their countries to other countries.
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Egyptian government has provided health and medical services to refugees like Egyptians without discrimination within the framework of national efforts to fight the pandemic.
In his speech at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) in October 2019, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that Egypt has not built any camps for refugees, and has not allowed any boat to leave Egypt with refugees onboard toward Europe
The refugees in Egypt do not live on aid or wait for food from any international or local organization. They are allowed to work, get the necessary licenses to open restaurants, and many other buildings, he added.
