Egypt’s FM Sameh Shoukry hands over a letter from President Sisi to Russia’s Putin

CAIRO – 4 October 2021:  Egypt’s foreign minister Sameh Shoukry handed over on Monday to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov a letter from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Shoukry, head to Russia on Sunday in a three-day visit, to meet with several Russian officials and discusses number of issues of mutual concern.

 

 

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Hafez said on Twitter that Shourky met at the start of his visit to Moscow with Lavrov and handed him Sisi's message to Putin.

Hafez said Shoukry asserted during the meeting the historic ties binding the two countries and the continued coordination between them in the various spheres.

In a joint press conference with Lavrov, Shoukry said they discussed latest developments on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam [GERD], and efforts to reach a binding legal solution on filling and operating the dam.

Shoukry added that they discussed the situation in Syria, Libya and the ‘historic relations’ between the two countries.

Shoukry stressed that Egypt is keen on ending the conflict in Syria, achieving stability, security and preserving the country’s unity.

Sergey Lavrov visited Egypt in April 2021 and held discussions with Shoukry on the updates in the MENA region including updates in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Libya.

They also discussed boosting cooperation and relations between Cairo and Moscow, and the latest developments on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
