CAIRO - 23 September 2021: Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced the initial operation hours for the newly-inaugurated Martyr Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel II in South Sinai for the crossing of different vehicles.
The new tunnel will operate from the east to the west bank of the Suez Canal, starting from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, said the SCA chairperson admiral Osama Rabie.
Martyr Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel II will run parallel to the old "Martyr Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel" I, through which the vehicles cross from the west to the east in the same period, Rabie added. The old tunnel will be crossed by vehicles in both directions from 4:00 pm to 8:00 am on the following day, he continued.
“After the end of the experimental operation, the new tunnel will run 24 hours with its full capacity soon,” said Rabie
A series of giant tunnels beneath the Suez Canal has shortened the time of vehicle journey from the east to the west of the canal and vice versa, as the time for crossing the tunnels does not exceed 10 minutes, he said.
The 4,250-kilometer Tunnel II was built by a consortium between Concorde and Petrojet companies, under the supervision of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces. The tunnel consists of two lanes with 3.6 meters in width and 5.5 meters in height each.
Two days ago, President Sisi inaugurated the tunnel, along with a number of development projects in the Sinai peninsula.
