Egypt’s Prosecutor General orders probe into video showing doctor insulting nurse

CAIRO – 10 September 2021: Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hamada el Sawy ordered Friday a probe into a video showing a doctor working at Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital insulting a male nurse, forcing him to do jump ropes and salute his dog.

The four-minute video, which went viral on social media platforms, showed the doctor hurling insults at the elderly nurse and asking him to kneel and pray for his dog.

The video caused a wave of anger among social media users who saw the doctor misusing his power against the nurse, abusing him and publishing these videos on social media.

Health Minister Hala Zayed also ordered the formation of a committee to probe into the video.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said the doctor was suspended from work and the clinic, where the incident took place, was temporarily closed until completing ongoing investigations.

During statements to ‘al Hekaya’ show hosted by Amr Adib on MBC Masr channel, the nurse who appeared in the video, Adel Salem, said that the doctor was used to make similar behaviors with him before, but that was the first time for such a video to be published on social media and go viral.

“It hurt me and my family to see such video published publicly everywhere on tv and social media” Salem said, adding that he ‘just wanted to keep his job at the clinic’.

As for the doctor who appeared in the video, he claimed that his mobile phone was hacked and the hackers were blackmailing him to restore his date back.

The doctor called Amr Khairy, added that half of the video is fabricated, and that he never asked the nurse to kneel for his dog.

The nurse, Adel Salem, however, affirmed that the whole situation took place as it was showed, six months ago.
