CAIRO – 2 September 2021: Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) extended its sincere thanks to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly for his recent decision to establish the first assembled unit for protecting women against violence.
The to-be-established assembled unit, affiliated with the Cabinet, will have its main headquarters in Cairo, with branches in different governorates.
In a statement starting with the phrase “Thanks Dr. Mostafa Madbouly…A dream come true,” Maya Morsi, the head of NCW, expressed her pride and happiness with the decision that aims to assemble efforts and services directed to women and girls who are exposed to any form of violence, in addition to providing necessary assistance in that regard.
Morsi added that the decision is “historic” and the first of its kind in Egypt, and is added to Egyptian women’s accomplishments that guarantee her protection and maintaining her rights.
“The Egyptian women are stepping forward in their golden age and have obtained many gains under a supportive political leadership that believes in their role in society and empowering them in all fields,” she said.
In the statement, Morsi explained in details the goals of the to-be-established assembled unit:
1- The main objective of the unit is to establish a compound headquarters for the services of the agencies and ministries concerned with dealing with cases of violence against women in one place, in order to facilitate the procedures pursued in dealing with such crimes so that women can obtain all aspects of support.
2- The unit also coordinates and unifies the efforts of the authorities by placing suitable places for them within the unit. It is not related to the basic competencies of the ministries.
3- The assembled unit model allows to facilitate all procedures, services and referral systems that women exposed to violence need, starting with the process of receiving complaints and reports related to issues of violence against women, and taking the necessary measures to examine them, through communicating with the concerned authorities, following them up and providing legal support and medical, health, psychological and social services.
4- The unit includes the Ministries of Justice, Interior, Health and Population, Social Solidarity, Public Prosecution, the National Council for Women, and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood. Representatives of other ministries and agencies may also be added per Prime Minister decision.
5- A general supervisor of the unit shall supervise the unit, manage its financial and administrative affairs, coordinate with the concerned authorities, and provide special requirements to perform its work in accordance with the nature and objective of the unit. Reports on the unit's work are presented to the Prime Minister.
