Egypt’s Arab contractors erected 158K cubic meters of concrete in Tanzanian Julius Nyerere dam in a month

CAIRO - 19 August 2021:  Egypt’s Arab Contractor Company has erected 158,000 cubic meters of concrete in the body of the under-construction Julius Nyerere dam in Tanzania within one month, said Houssam El-Din El-Rifi, member of the Board of Directors in media remarks on Wednesday.

 

“This is the first dam that is built by Egyptian hands and an alliance between the Arab Contractors Company and El Sewedy Electric,” he told “Sa’aa and Sa’aa’ program on Nagham FM radio.

 

“The company is working on the construction of the Julius Nyerere dam Hydropower station in Tanzania […] Construction field in Egypt over the recent period has gained pioneering experience,” he added.

 

Egypt also is participating in the construction of the Stiegler's Gorge dam on the Rufiji River to generate hydroelectric power in Tanzania. 

 

El-Sisi confirmed that he has been following up phases of implementing this project in order to ensure the best performance in accordance with the highest international standards and the time frame stipulated in the contract, within the framework of the distinguished relations between Egypt and Tanzania, said Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Radi in a statement in July 2019.

 

In September 2020, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed the government to complete the construction of Tanzania's Rufiji Dam and Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant.

 

The plant aims to produce electrical power with a capacity of 2,115 megawatts and is being implemented at a cost of $2.9 billion. The amount of electricity produced per annum will be 6,307 megawatts/hour. The capacity of the transmission lines connecting the plant to a regular power plant is 400 kilovolts.

 

Four dams will be constructed in addition to the main dam in order to form the reservoir. Also, 2 temporary dams located in front of and behind the main dam will be in place to redirect Rufiji River while the main dam is being built. There will be two siphons for surplus water. One of them is for emergencies.
