President Abdel Fattah El Sisi gives a speech at the 8th Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Conference on Women
CAIRO – 8 July 2021: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi inaugurated on Thursay the 8th Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Conference on Women, on the theme “Preserving the Gains of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in the Coronavirus pandemic and beyond”.
In his speech, President Sisi announced that start of work of the newly-established Organization of Women’s development,’ the first specialized organization within the framework of OIC work to promote and protect women's rights.
“I am pleased to participate today in the opening of the 8th Session of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women in the Egyptian Administrative Capital, which represents an image of modern Egypt,” said President Sisi, adding that Organization of Women’s development is the first specialized organization within the framework of OIC work to promote and protect women's rights.
“Egypt gave great attention to women amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a lot of work we have to do for helping women enjoy their rightful status in our society,” he continued.
Islam gave women their rights more than 1,400 years ago, President Sisi continued, affirming that women’s empowerment is the key to building strong civilizations.
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi affirmed that Egypt over the coming two years will focus on two main issues: empowering women economically and combating the negative impacts of terrorism and extremism against women.
“Egypt will spare no effort to support the Organization of Women's Development within the framework of OIC work,” he said.
He announced that Egypt will pay annual financial contributions that should be paid by countries with low growth rates and who are 22 members of the Organization of Women’s development.
President of Egypt's National Council for Women Maya Morsy said in her speech at the conference that Egypt has taken a package of measures and legislative amendments in favor of women.
She said that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is the first and leading supporter Egyptian women and the defender of their rights as it exemplified in many achievements.
Under President Sisi’s leadership, women assumed high ranking positions in judiciary and several pro-women laws and legislations were issued, she added, noting the government also provided social protection for women with an adequate housing, good healthcare.
Egypt is the first country in the world that strategically created pro-women a comprehensive package of policies and programs since the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic in March 2020, she said.
Morsy added that Egypt also launched a mechanism to monitor and follow up the implementation of those policies in March 2020.
Helene Marie Laurence Ilboudo Marchal, Minister of Women praised Egyptian Abdel Fattah El Sisi for the pro-women achievements in Egypt.
OIC Secretary-General Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen praised Egypt’s efforts in women’s empowerment, saying that women face many challenges that we have to fight.
“I come to you from a land where unprecedented attention and time are given to women issues, unlocking their full potential as a driving force for development across all areas of the Saudi Vision 2030, launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz,” said Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen.
The Secretary General said this speaks volumes for Egypt’s “high level of commitment and dedication to help the OIC achieve its overriding objectives of promoting joint Islamic action for women’s empowerment and participation in all spheres of society.”
He also stated that the Conference demonstrates the pursuit of the OIC “to send out a message to the wider Muslim community and the world at large that Islam, in its pristine and pure form, dignifies the status of women and treats them as an essential partner in all realms.”
On the follow-up to the implementation of the resolutions of the Conference’s seventh session (Ouagadougou, 2018), Dr Al-Othaimeen said, “Despite faltering coronavirus-induced challenges, and with the support of the Member States and coordination of the OIC relevant organs and institutions, the General Secretariat succeeded in conducting a fine record of related training sessions and workshops, along with preparing relevant studies and reports.
