CAIRO – 7 July 2021: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to stress the international community’s responsibility for contributing to resolving the situation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue.
Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s stand on the GERD to Guterres and called on the Security Council to support reaching a legally binding agreement that guarantees the interests of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.
Earlier, Shoukry met with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, T. S. Tirumurt, to explain Egypt and Sudan’s worries about the dam. In a matter of hours, the Security Council will hold a session on the GERD as requested by Tunisia on behalf of the Arab League.
The terms of the resolution proposed by Tunisia include:
1 – Demand that Ethiopia cease the second filling of the GERD
2 – Demand that Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia resume negotiations.
3 – Reach a binding agreement on GERD in six months.
4 – Demand that the three countries stop any measure that delays negotiations.
5 – Demand that Ethiopia stop unilateral decisions.
