CAIRO – 29 June 2021: Egypt’s Ministry of Endowment announced inaugurating eight new mosques on Friday after being renovated.

In March, Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments announced inaugurating 48 new mosques after finishing renovations.

The mouses are located in several governorates including South Sinai, Beheira, Kafr El Sheikh, Damietta, Asyut, Fayoum, Sharqia and Qalyubia.

The Ministry of Endowments said in a statement last February that a total of LE400 million were spent for the maintenance of ancient mosques in Egypt during the past five years.

By Friday, the total number of mosques that were inaugurated since September 2020 will reach 1,211, including 1391 renovated mosques, and 120 others maintained and restored.

Around LE 200 million of the total sum were provided from the budget of the ministries of Endowment and Antiquities, while the other LE 200 million were personal efforts and international grants allocated to the Ministry of Antiquities.

This comes as part of the state’s keenness to maintain its historical antiquities, and the ancient mosques as well.

In February, the Ministry of Endowments said, in a statement, that a total of 400 million Egyptian Pound were spent for the maintenance of ancient mosques in Egypt during the past five years.
