CAIRO – 15 June 2021: Minya Criminal Court, sentenced, Tuesday 10 defendants to 5 years in prison and the acquittal of 14 others involved in violence and vandalism acts including stripping a 74-year-old Christian woman in n Al-Karm village in Abu Qurqas city, Minya governorate [Upper Egypt].
The incident goes back to May 2016 when a group of Muslim people stripped Souad Thabet (74 years) and paraded her naked in Al-Karm village after a clash erupted in the village due to rumors of an illegal relationship between a married Muslim woman and Thabet’s son. The defendants also had attacked her husband and torched her house.
In January 2020, three men were sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia; however, a retrial was held after they appeared before the court, which directed their acquittal. Later in the same month, Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hamada el Sawy ordered an appeal against the acquittal of the three men.
Dozens of people went to social media platforms, creating a hashtag #سيده_الكرم (Al-Karm Laday).
